Quercus I Robur

Quercus is a range from Box Distillery wherein we try to explore the tastes that different species of oak gives to the whisky. The first edition is named Robur after the European Oak (pedunculate oak), Quercus robur in Latin. Quercus robur is common in Europe, especially in Burgundy and Limousine where it’s widely used in the wine- and cognac industry. It’s also that species of oak you’ll find in Scandinavia up to the north of Stockholm. Quercus robur contains quite a lot of tannins and antioxidants and gives a spicy and sweet taste to the whisky.


100 % unpeated whisky that first have been matured on 200-litres bourbon casks for 4.1 years and then finished for 7 months in 40-litres casks of virgin Quercus robur.

Average Fermenting Time: 80 hours in stainless steel washbacks.

Distilled between 3rd October and 12:th october 2012.

First cut of the run: 13 minutes head (forshots).

Second cut of the run: 67 % ABV (20°C).

Ingoing casks

The bourbon casks of 200 litres (1st fill barrels) was delivered from Kentucky US. The casks of Quercus robur, 40 litres Anchors, is coopered of Thorslunds Kagge in Sweden. The Oak trees used to this Anchors comes from the southeast of Sweden. The bourbon casks has until october 2014 been stored in a dump warehouse, losing some of its alcohol strength. From October 2014 to August 2017 was the casks stored in a drier climate at Box warehouse number three.

The bourbon casks were emtied the 17th of januari 2017 and the alcohol strength was fixed from 60,4 % to 55 %. The whisky was then filled into 100 Anchors (40 litres) made of virgin Swedish oak (Quercus robur), 99 Anchors was medium plus toasted and 1 hard toasted before charring. The casks were emtied into a vatting tank the 31th of august and the alcohol strength was fixed to 50.8 % when bottling.

Quercus 1 robur was bottled the 4th Sept to 6th Sept in a volume of 8 229 bottles.

We recommend allowing Quercus 1 Robur to breathe in the glass for a while before enjoying.

Feel free to add a couple of drops of water to release the aromas in the whisky.

Quercus I Robur is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.


Jäst: Fermentis Safwhisky M-1.

Malt: Pilsnermalt from Vikingmalt in Halmstad Sweden.

Ingoing Barley types: Henley and Sebastian.

Process water: From the Bålsjön Lake, filtered through sand and carbon filters.

Cooling Water: From the Ångerman River.

Ingoing batches: 308B, 330A-349B, 370A-378A.
