Quercus II Alba
Quercus is a range from Box Distillery where we try to explore the tastes that different species of oak give to the whisky. The second edition is named Alba after the American White Oak, Quercus alba in Latin. Quercus alba is common in eastern and central North America where it is widely used in the whiskey- and wine industry. Quercus alba contains lower levels of tannins and higher levels of lactones (coconut flavor) compared to the European oak species.
100 % unpeated whisky that first has been matured in 140-litres bourbon cask for 5.1 years and in 200-litres bourbon casks for 3 and 4.1 years and then finished for 2.7, 1.02 and 0.83 years in 40- and 96 litres casks of virgin Quercus alba.
Average Fermenting Time: 80 hours in stainless steel washbacks.
Distilled between 7th February 2012 and 10th December 2012.
First cut of the run: 13 minutes head (forshots).
Second cut of the run: 67 % ABV (20°C).
The bourbon casks of 200 litres (1st fill barrels) were delivered from Kentucky US and the 140 litres (1st fill quarter casks) were manufactured by Speyside Cooperage. The casks of Quercus alba, 40 litres Anchors, is coopered by Thorslundkagge in Sweden. The bourbon casks has until October 2014 been stored in a dump warehouse, losing some of its alcohol strength. From October 2014 to January 2018 the casks were stored in a drier climate at Box warehouse number three.
The bourbon casks were emptied and the whisky was then filled into 83 Anchors (40 litres) and 14 96-litres casks made of virgin American oak (Quercus alba) with char #3. The casks were emptied into a vatting tank January 25th-26th and the alcohol strength was fixed to 50.8 % when bottling.
Quercus II Alba was bottled the 5th Feb to 6th Feb in a volume of 9 799 bottles.
We recommend allowing Quercus II Alba to breathe in the glass for a while before enjoying.
Feel free to add a couple of drops of water to release the aromas in the whisky.
Quercus II Alba is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Process water: From the Bålsjön Lake, filtered through sand and carbon filters.
